Last Sunday, I visited London to attend the second Grounded Creatives networking event. Bringing together people working in the creative industries – from full-time professionals to passionate ‘side hustlers’, host Nancy Straughan’s meetups provide a relaxed and inclusive alternative to traditional networking events. Nancy, a brand and event stylist, curated a beautiful space within InsideStore London, with stunning floral displays contributed by Bloom + Burn (pictured).

The afternoon began with a talk from Hannah of Ditto Creatives, an international branding agency. Hannah gave us an insight into business finances, explaining how reviewing their pricing strategy enabled them to restructure their business from a commercial print shop into a boutique branding agency. They now provide branding packages that not only reflect the value of their work but also allow them to attract clients that they love and can sustain their business. As a startup and someone who has previously worked in a similar environment, this talk really resonated with me and provided me with the incentive and confidence to review my own pricing.

Following the talk, we all ate delicious food from The Banqueteers and Sugarplum Bakes and began to network. As someone who is generally mortified by the idea of networking, this was the part that terrified me. Thankfully, everyone there was so open and friendly that time flew past and my anxiety soon subsided. It was lovely to have the opportunity to speak to so many talented women, from photographers to fellow calligraphers. We all had the chance to share our stories and talk about our experiences within the industry, as well as vent our frustrations about various aspects. What struck me the most was how supportive the atmosphere was – it was a genuinely positive and welcoming space and a valuable experience.
